Grant Bazin from Practical Horsemanship and his colleague Dan Wilson gave another fabulous demonstration last Saturday 27th July.  Both Grant and Dan have, in the past, worked with Monty Roberts, the American horse trainer, known as the ‘Horse Whisperer’ for many years.  An enthralled audience watched as they showed how using non-violence you could train horses through their phobias.  Their first demonstration was on Mungo, a large 16.3hh horse, who had been injured and had been scared of being ridden for 18 months.  By gaining his trust Dan was able to eventually ride Mungo quite happily around the demonstration pen.  Their next horse had been a racehorse and would not stand still at a mounting block, not something a jockey usually does!  Within ¾ hour Grant, Dan and a couple of Grant’s students were able to mount him from a block and a chair.  The final demo was with our loan pony, Keira, who was a little concerned about being loaded on a horsebox due to a previous incident when travelling with another pony.  Dan showed us how by being patient and gaining her confidence she was confident to be boxed by a long rein and by one of our RDA riders.  This was an inspiring afternoon and enjoyed by all who attended showing how a bond can be formed between the horse and its handler.

Our RDA volunteers had supplied cakes for the refreshment table and we held a raffle.  Ron Hill kindly gave us an hour’s shooting lesson to auction and with the ticket sales the afternoon raised £880 for our funds.

Our thanks go to Grant, Dan and their team from Practical Horsemanship for so kindly giving their time and skills for free and to Dan Wain of DS Equestrian for allowing us to use the stable facilities.
